I say “maybe” because the murder the hero witnesses is bloody, grisly and shocking.
At least, I hope it is.
In the fiction writing business, Chapter One is typically intended to move the reader from the rack to the cash register. It’s supposed to be a “grabber” that, once read, compels the reader to buy the book.
If I’ve succeeded, you’ll want to read Chapter Two which will become available the following Saturday morning. That process will continue, one chapter each Saturday, until all but the climactic ending have been posted.
At that point, unfortunately, a decision must be made: whether to post the climax on the website free of charge, or to make it available only in a Kindle or other (inexpensive) eBook publication.
The publisher, if any, may insist that the final chapter be available only by buying a copy of the eBook. My giving it away on this website might, therefore, become a deal breaker. (Yes, even though I am formally retired, I still prostitute my ethics for a buck.)
I don’t know the answer to the question of an eBook or a free edition, so for the time being, I’m keeping all options open.
Regardless, I do promise the ending will be thrilling! It involves a very tall building in an exotic location, a more than trivial amount of high explosives, the bad guy holding the beautiful romantic interest in great danger, and some very risky heroics by, of course, the hero — but you could probably predict that.
What you don’t know, of course, is how it actually works out.
Neither do I.
I have three endings I’m exploring. In one, the girl saves our hero but sacrifices her own life — my wife doesn’t like that one but, hey, it’s very noble of her. In another, the hero plugs the bad guy smack dab in the middle of his forehead — the hero is, after all, a Bullseye pistol shooter. And in the third alternative climactic ending, well, you’ll just have to wait and see.
Look for chapter one, the grabber, this Saturday morning (midday for Europeans).
